The story of Abelard takes place in Melbourne, Australia, with a family of passionate shirtmakers. Founded in 1970, the Salco Group would explore the finest European mills, returning home with unique fabrics that were never seen before on Australian shores.
Their mission to bring the European aesthetic down under launched the humble beginnings of Abelard – a menswear brand committed to European tradition, quality, and enduring innovation.
Since its inception, Abelard incorporates the expertise of three generations of shirtmakers. Our heritage and expert knowledge are passed down to ensure our commitment to quality European-inspired designs remain everlasting.
The Salco Group, which owns Abelard, is in its 101st year and remains a privately owned fourth-generation family business.

Who was Abelard?
Abelard was a medieval French philosopher and theological scholar, who achieved fame throughout the continent for his writings. He later achieved infamy by falling in love with the pious beauty Heloise against her family’s wishes. She had a son out of wedlock and was then forced into life as a nun. Their relationship is one of history’s greatest unrequited love stories.
Hence, the name "Abelard" encapsulates our customer's everlasting loyalty to contemporary European design, where each piece of clothing remains beloved and passed down to every generation of man.
